A person sustained a severe shark bite to the leg in an attack off South Padre Island, Texas, on July 4th. This incident was one of several shark attacks reported on the holiday weekend.

Authorities also reported that a 21-year-old man was bitten in a separate attack off the coast of Texas. Data from 1911 to the present indicates that several counties in Texas have experienced shark attacks.

The Fourth of July festivities turned into a nightmare for beachgoers in South Padre Island's waters. South Padre Island police responded to the scene of the most severe attack, which occurred in the 4100 block of the beach.
